The fire services fitout for the Box Hill RSL redevelopment was a critical component of the broader transformation of this iconic community facility. Delivered in collaboration with Jointly, the project involved the design, installation, and commissioning of comprehensive fire protection systems that met current Australian standards and supported the diverse functional spaces within the upgraded venue.
The redevelopment introduced a complex mix of public, hospitality, and administrative zones—including dining areas, bars, commercial kitchens, gaming spaces, and meeting rooms—each requiring tailored fire protection solutions. The fire services scope encompassed both wet and dry systems, with careful coordination to ensure safety, compliance, and minimal visual impact in high-traffic areas.
Modifications to the existing sprinkler system were carried out to accommodate the new layout and ceiling types. Additional sprinkler heads were installed in accordance with AS 2118.1, ensuring adequate coverage throughout the new facilities. Particular attention was given to concealed spaces and feature ceilings, requiring custom bracketry and precise hydraulic design. The entire system was hydraulically tested and certified to meet flow and pressure requirements.
A comprehensive fire detection and occupant warning system was installed across the site, including smoke and heat detectors, EWIS speakers, and manual call points, all interfaced with the main fire indicator panel. These systems were designed and installed in line with AS 1670.1 and AS 1851, providing early detection and ensuring the safety of staff, patrons, and guests.
Portable fire equipment—including extinguishers, blankets, and hose reels—was installed throughout the premises to AS 2444 standards, with appropriate signage and positioning based on hazard assessments. Passive fire protection works, such as the sealing of penetrations and installation of fire-rated doors and dampers, were completed in accordance with AS 4072.1 and the National Construction Code (NCC), ensuring the integrity of fire compartments and safe egress paths.
Collaboration with Jointly throughout the project was key to delivering a well-integrated and high-quality outcome. Weekly site coordination meetings ensured the fire services works remained aligned with construction progress and met all program milestones.
The final result is a fully compliant, discreetly integrated fire protection system that supports the operational needs of the new Box Hill RSL while prioritising the safety of its occupants and enhancing long-term asset protection.
